An Epic New LORD OF THE RINGS MMO Game Is in the Works at Amazon Games

Amazon has recently announced a partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop an expansive new multiplayer online (MMO) video game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s renowned fantasy saga, The Lord of the Rings. This highly anticipated game will be set in an open-world environment, featuring the captivating narratives of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The project is still in its early stages and is being spearheaded by Amazon Games Orange County, the same studio responsible for Amazon Games’ successful open-world MMO title, New World. Christoph Hartmann, Vice President of Amazon Games, expressed their commitment to delivering high-quality gaming experiences and their enthusiasm for embarking on a fresh journey within the beloved world of The Lord of the Rings. Amazon Games is honored and grateful for the opportunity given by Middle-earth Enterprises to explore this iconic universe.

Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode, the division of Embracer Group that houses Middle-earth Enterprises, highlighted the enduring allure of the Middle-earth universe for creative endeavors. Guinchard emphasized Amazon Games’ passion for crafting immersive and captivating worlds, alongside their experience in publishing games for a global audience. This isn’t Amazon’s first foray into the creation of a Lord of the Rings MMO game. Their initial attempt, in collaboration with Leyou Technologies back in 2019, was set in a time predating the events of The Lord of the Rings. However, the project was abandoned following Leyou’s acquisition by China’s Tencent, as negotiations between Amazon and Tencent for the future of the game fell through.

While an official release date has yet to be announced, Amazon Games plans to publish the highly anticipated Lord of the Rings MMO globally for both PC and consoles. Fans and gamers alike eagerly anticipate the unveiling of this epic gaming experience, hopeful that it will authentically capture the essence and grandeur of Tolkien’s extraordinary world.
