Embracing the Dark: WITCHFIRE Unleashes Unprecedented Soulslike Mayhem in the World of FPS Fantasy
The Astronauts, a Warsaw, Poland-based game developer, emerged from the remnants of People Can Fly, a studio celebrated for its creation of iconic titles like Painkiller and Bulletstorm. After some reshuffling, the talented team coalesced under the banner of The Astronauts and went on to astound gamers with their 2014 release, “The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.” Fast forward to today, and they’ve delivered another unexpected gem – “Witchfire.”
Don’t be deceived by its enchanting aesthetics. In this game, the tranquil hub area is the only respite you’ll encounter.
As I embarked on my journey through this visually stunning world, I was eager to confront supernatural foes and track down “The Witch.” Little did I know, my initial steps would lead to a series of unfortunate deaths. “Witchfire” is not your typical first-person shooter; it leans more towards the punishing difficulty of the soulslike genre. You will die, and unless you’re prepared for the challenges that lie ahead, you’ll undoubtedly experience frustration. I quickly learned that defeating single adversaries and retreating was the key to leveling up, which, in turn, unlocks the ability to craft health potions and more. This game is far from a leisurely stroll in the park; it’s brutally difficult. However, it rewards your perseverance with a level of polish rarely witnessed in Early Access titles.
The audiovisual elements of “Witchfire” are nothing short of breathtaking.
Even though I’m still in the early stages of the game, I’m eagerly looking forward to navigating through expeditions (levels) and unearthing more treasure, uncovering secrets, and, with any luck, acquiring powerful new weapons. If you’re seeking a challenging gaming experience that breaks away from the conventional mold of soulslike or FPS titles, “Witchfire” is right up your alley. It’s currently available in Early Access on PC through the Epic Games Store. So, gear up for a uniquely exhilarating adventure that promises to test your mettle.
