How AI in Games Could Affect the Movies We Watch

The development of AI and technology can be seen worldwide; be this in our cars, smartphones, or household appliances, IT developers are determined to create software that perfectly replicates genuine human interaction. Gaming is currently one of the leading industries that are using AI to their advantage; however, while this is beneficial in some respects, there could also be a negative trickle-down effect, specifically in the movies we watch.

Developments are being made on the implementation of AI in video games constantly. Following the recent release of the GPT-3 video game tool, heavier incorporation and reliance on AI in the games we play looms on the horizon. This is extremely exciting, as having computer software that replicates human interaction will make for an extremely immersive gaming experience.

By creating this software, it will be able to infer human emotion from the text. The storytelling aspect of gameplay is already incredible, and so if the emotions of the person playing can be considered, affecting how certain events unfold as a result. This will only take what people already love about gaming and enhance it.

The Potential Trickle-Down into Movies

So, how will this affect the movies we watch? One of the aspects of AI will be the ability to retain data, specifically, how players react to different elements in a game and what decisions they make when playing. This information will impact the games that are made in the future, as they will be created with gamers’ actions in mind.

The number of movies that get made from video games is a testament to the intricate storytelling that goes into what we play now. For example, consider the new Assassin’s Creed or Warcraft films. This is all understandable as if a game has a good story, why not turn it into a movie?

The issue is what might happen due to the information retained on gamers when it comes to creating future scripts for films. The line between film and gaming is already blurred. Who is to say movie studios will not take gamers’ decisions that they have obtained through AI and use this when developing scripts? Forthcoming films from budding writers could be cast aside if they don’t hit a certain beat by page 5, or if there isn’t a specific redemption arc or fight scene, purely because the data received from people who game suggests that’s what movies should contain.

The gaming community would essentially be used as one big focus group. While these aren’t necessarily bad things, certainly not in other businesses such as retail, hospitality, or Casinos, especially when it comes to making long-term customer relationships, is this something that should come in the way of creativity?

AI is going to have a strong future in gaming, and there is no question about it. It will create more immersive storytelling for gamers and assist businesses with developing future games as they will have a better understanding of the actions and intentions of the people who play.

While the above is positive, given the close relationships that exist between movies and games, there is doubt cast over whether having players’ data from what they do in games may impact the development of future movie scripts. Whether this will be a genuine issue that could impact the creative element of future films, only time will tell.
