Building your own gaming rig is steadily becoming the new norm for hardcore gamers. For most people, sourcing and putting the parts together are part of their creative process, and one of the essential components in any gaming rig is the monitor. Here are some key considerations you should be looking for in a gaming monitor:
- Size and Resolution
To kick it off, let’s start with the most apparent considerations, which are the size and resolution.
- 1080p – Commonly called HD or FHD. This resolution is best for monitors up to 24″. Anything higher than this monitor size will make the display pixelated. This screen resolution is best for casual gamers and all-around users.
- 1440p (2K) – Also called QHD. This resolution works best for monitor sizes 25″–32″. It’s a popular choice among professionals that deal with graphics and visuals as well as high-end gaming rigs.
- 2160 (4K) – If you want an ultra-high-definition monitor, this is the way to go. But, getting this monitor means that you are a professional who needs a lot of screen space and has a monitor size that’s at least above 30″.
A monitor with a higher resolution will have a higher pixel count. Monitors with 1440P or 2K resolution at 27″ are increasingly becoming the gaming standard nowadays as it is more future proof and provides a more pleasant gaming experience.
It may sound boring, but panels make a lot of difference in how good your gaming monitor looks in terms of color accuracy and viewing angles. There are two major types of monitor panels:
- Twisted nematic (TN) – This type of panel is the most ordinary kind of monitor out there. One excellent quality of TN panels is their response time, which can eliminate ghosting when playing games with fast-moving graphics. It is also cheaper and consumes less power than other types. But take note that you’re sacrificing good viewing angles and color accuracy with this panel.
- In-plane switching (IPS) – This panel is the complete opposite of TN panels. It has excellent viewing angles, and the color correction is superb. However, the response time with this panel isn’t as good and can be expensive depending on the quality.
If you’re someone who wants a faster response time and wants to avoid game lag as much as you can, better go for TN panels. But, if you’re a casual gamer and you value viewing angles and color accuracy, you can go for the more expensive IPS panel monitors.
- Refresh Rate
This is the rate your monitor refreshes the display per second. It is measured by Hz (Hertz). Your refresh rate also determines the number of frames per second the panel can display. These are the three most common refresh rates:
- 60Hz – This what you would commonly see in most monitors. It’s good enough for casual users, but for people playing games, this may not be enough.
- 144Hz – A monitor with this kind of refresh rate is perfect for any type of gamer, as it makes the animation more fluid. There are now an array of choices for a cheap 144HZ monitor, so getting one for your gaming rig shouldn’t break the bank.
- 240Hz – At this refresh rate, movements are fast. However, this kind of refresh rate is best for professionals who use their computers for making heavy animations and graphics.
The more frequent your monitor refreshes, the smoother the display will be. It is worth noting that a monitor with a higher refresh rate can only be powered if your hardware can push above 60 FPS.
- Input Ports
Your input ports are an important element of your computer as this will ensure that you’re getting the most out of your monitor.
- HDMI port – This is a common port in modern monitors and can usually power up most monitors. However, monitors with 1440p screen resolution can only get up to 60 Hz with an HDMI 1.4 port. Additionally, 4K monitors need an HDMI 2.0 port both on the monitor and on the graphics adapter.
- Display port 1.2 – Some monitors also have a display port alongside the HDMI. This kind of port can power up even high-end types of monitors without having any problems. For gamers, this should be essential to your monitor.
- FreeSync and G-Sync
These things are called adaptive sync technologies from AMD and Nvidia. Both of these technologies ensure that your monitor and your graphics adapter refresh at the same time. This feature prevents screen tearing and stuttering and eliminates lagging.
It’s not important to get a monitor with a good refresh rate, but it’s nice to have if you want to have a better gaming experience.
