Red Dead Online’s new update was packed with amazing fan-requested features and things, for example, ponchos and new missions are available now. But the thing that most fans were thrilled to try out was poker and its mechanics. Unfortunately, it is dependant on where you live you might not be able to play poker in Red Dead Online because of the local laws.

Rockstar taken the beta tag off Red Dead Online and in the means launched a huge update which fixed many bugs, added new content and balance some of the certain skills and weapons. Overall, the new DLC was celebrated in the community as a real step forward for the game. But some gamers getting into the virtual Wild West, and found out that they can’t play poker in the game, If you are one of those players who can’t play poker in the game and want to play some bets then you can head to online sports betting.

At the start, some thought it might be a bug or maybe we’re in the wrong place. But after talking to Rockstar support they realize the real reason they were being prevented to play poker was due to local laws and restrictions.

A fan shared a message on the Red Dead Online subreddit from Rockstar support after asking about poker and their failure to play it. Here is the message that the user received.

Thank you for contacting Rockstar Support.

We certainly understand your concern regarding not being able to play poker. We appreciate your interest in using this feature in the game.

We are sorry to let you know that the availability of Poker in Red Dead Online is dependent on regional laws and regulations and may not be available to all players. In short, poker won’t be available in countries where online gambling is restricted or illegal. We apologize if this had caused any inconvenience.

For any new updates, we recommend staying tuned to @RockstarGames on Twitter and

Your understanding is much appreciated, and please do not hesitate to reach out in the future if you are having technical issues with any of our titles.

There was also some other player was sent a similar message from Rockstar support, but with a link to a post on the official Rockstar support website which said:

“Certain features are not available at all times or for all players. This can occur for a number of reasons including regional restrictions, game design, or the incompatibility between features you are interacting with.”

All of this appears to verify that the capability to play poker in Red Dead Online is directly attached to the country you live in and the local laws of your country. This has, of course, pissed off some fans, who feel this limitation on poker is unjust.

One gamer in Argentia responded on the RDO subreddit that in their country many poker games are live and allowed, allowing players to use real money to play casino games and that even the government has online lotteries for the people, so it didn’t make sense why Red Dead poker was banned.

Something exciting to remember is that Red Dead Online didn’t allow players to use real money to buy in-game cash, which is what gamers use in poker matches in the virtual world. Instead, you can only get gold in Red Dead Online and you can’t use gold to buy cash to play poker so real money is not attached to gambling. This means that the cash players are using in Red Dead Online is never attached straight to purchased money. However, that difference doesn’t seem to be sufficient for some countries.

There is also likely a possibility that Rockstar themselves choose to block poker in some countries that have severe gambling laws, to bypass any potential problems in the future.

To get around these limitations, some players are taking advantage of VPNs to bypass the region lock on poker games. And some of the modders and data miners said using a VPN would be protected and a safe bet, there is still a chance that Rockstar would ban players for taking advantage of VPNs or similar techniques to avoid a country lock.

When someone reached Rockstar with the same question they provided information about this situation, players using VPNs, and regional limitations in their other games, and this link is sent to the support page that I discussed earlier with no other details.

The unused casino in GTA Online

Players are also waiting for the Grand Theft Auto Online casino to be open, which could still happen in the future. But this recent RDO update and poker condition might be a preview of what would happen if the casino in GTA Online opened in the near future. Many players may find themselves barred out of the place, unable to gamble due to local country laws.
