Samsung Can Provide Global Internet Coverage With Thousands Of Micro-satellite
4600 is the current number of satellites being proposed by the tech giant to cover the whole Earth. This is not just a concept out of the blue as data demand in the future will become so high that it will be difficult for Internet providing companies to keep up with the rising tide.
It is estimated that the world will have 5 billion internet users by 2028 and their demand for collective data will be close to 1 ZetaByte per month or 1 billion Terabytes. The satellites of today aren’t capable of that ridiculous amount of traffic, so Samsung’s suggestion is a valid one. A constellation of these satellites might be the best solution for the current problem and Samsung, having put the idea forward, could do the electronics part too.
In a new report from the tech giant with an epic title “mobile internet from the heavens”, Samsung gave this concept that not only there would be this many satellites required, they should also be placed closer to the Earth to get the best performance out of them. Most of the modern communication satellites hover around at more than 35,000 kilometers from Earth’s surface. The distance imposes a hard limit for data transfer due to the time required to send data back and forth. It is the high Earth Orbital region and Samsung instead wants the new satellite network be placed on the Low Orbital path and reduce the data delay to minimum levels.
The new satellites aren’t going to be geostationary either, and they are going to move around the place all the time. So, it will be a positive point for the network recipients as no particular satellite will handling one region. The multitude of satellites will ensure better connectivity and outreach of internet facilities throughout the world.
This is not the first attempt to create a web of satellites in synchronized orbit to provide mobile internet. Elon Musk and his cutting edge space startup SpaceX had also made plans and requested the permission of FCC to let him build a universal internet providing coverage through satellites. Sir Richard Branson had also wanted to make a homing system of satellites, but for the purpose of stargazing and telescopes. Facebook is also attempting to launch an internet.org system to give access to internet to all parts of the globe.
