Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Prototype ROM Discovered!
Sonic’s third Genesis/Mega Drive game was too big and too ambitious for just one cartridge; it was split-up between two carts: Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. This week, a prototype ROM (which was dated November 3, 1993) of the entire early build of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was dropped and released into the Internet-sphere, stimulating the curiosity of old-school Sonic fans and retro gamers equally.
There are all kinds of characteristics and twists that set this version apart: Sonic bursts into Angel Island with a board; there are all sorts of music improvements; it appears Flying Battery was deemed to happen much earlier in the storyline; deleted badniks and prototype bonus stages. Notably, it looks like there was a very initial version of the drop-dash, a mechanic that Sonic Mania gamers know all too well, and other fun characteristics to look out for!
