Super Mario Bros. 3 Now Holds The Title For Most Expensive Game Ever Sold
Super Mario Bros. 3 is the most expensive game now ever sold, after a sealed copy from 1990 sold for $156,000 at an auction. Bidding started at $62,500, and 20 bidders were bidding in the auction. The NES game beat out the previous record-holder, Super Mario Bros., which sold for $114,000 in July.
According to Heritage Auctions, the game’s record-breaking price happened because of some unusual reasons. The first was its very rare box design, which has the word “Bros.” written to the left on its front, where it obscures Mario’s hand. Later versions moved the word to the center-right.
A sealed copy of Pokémon Red became the most valuable Pokémon game ever sold when it was bought for $84,000 during Friday’s auction. Heritage Auctions doesn’t mention whether there was anything novel about this version, but it seems to have been sold in exceptionally good condition, with a 9.8 A++ WATA rating.
