The Best First Person Shooter Games for 2022

By  |

First person shooter games never go out of style. They’re a classic gaming model that keeps players engaged and evolves with each passing year. While many gamers view Doom as the original FPS game, this subgenre has a rich history dating back to the early 1970s.

There’s something for everyone, whether you’re new to FPS games or a long-time fan. 2022 has been a particularly exciting year for first person shooter games. Here are some of the top picks for players looking for a new obsession.

Rainbow Six Extraction

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction

Tom Clancy’s video game series has long been a favorite among FPS gamers. Valorant fans (check this URL for useful advices: ) often recommend this series to newcomers looking for something comparable to try— the 2019 release of Tom Clancy’s Division 2 is a top pick.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction is the latest release. This spin-off of 2015’s Rainbow Seige is a collaborative online game designed for teams of three. Players must work together during each incursion (session) to complete objectives in a dangerous world that’s been overtaken by alien invaders.

Released in January 2022, this game garnered three million players during the first week. Reviews are mixed, but many critics love the drama and immersive nature of the game’s narrative. Others find it a poor follow-up to Extraction as it lacks the initial shock factor and novelty. The best way to decide is to try it for yourself.

Apex Legends: Defiance

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is another FPS game that’s often compared and contrasted with Valorant and Fortnite. While this game was originally released on Xbox, PS4, and Windows in 2019, and Nintendo Switch in 2021, it’s really gaining traction in 2022. Apex Legends was released on PS5 and Xbox X/S in March with a mobile IoS and Android version released in May.

There are two primary forms of gameplay in Apex Legends: Battle Royale and Arenas. The Battle Royale model puts teams of 2-3 players in the fray with 20 or 30 other teams. In Arenas, your group of 2-3 players competes directly with another team of 2-3 players.

What sets this FPS game apart is the unique characteristics of each skin. Whereas games like Fortnite have aesthetic skins, each character in Apex Legends has different skills, strengths, and weaknesses. This feature pays homage to classic FPS games.

Choo-Choo Charles

Choo-Choo Charles

Choo-Choo Charles is a whimsical blend of horror, FPS, and questing. This immersive PC game brings players into a dark and twisted forest, where spider-like train monsters roam about and cause havoc. Meanwhile, your goal is to scavenge old parts and build a train that will take you throughout the map to advance gameplay.

The player will interact with NPCs for clues to build a train that can take on the big boss himself, Choo-Choo Charles. This game is the equivalent of Stephen King having a nightmare that blends Maximum Overdrive with IT— and it’s fantastic.

High on Life

High on Life

If you’re looking for something completely different that fits the standard FPS genre, you can’t go wrong with High on Life. This wacky FPS game features an alien invasion in which humans are consumed for a euphoric “high.”

Developed by the creator of Rick and Morty, this game features bright colors, eye-catching animations, and talking cartoonish guns. Despite some of the child-like features of this game, it’s designed for an adult audience.

High on Life is scheduled for release on Xbox in December 2022 after a few production delays. The game is described as “Blade Runner meets The Muppets” which pretty much says everything you need to know.

Whether you like horror, comedy, classic FPS, modern FPS, or a blend of everything, there’s something for everyone in 2022. Check out these games, hone your skills, and find a new passion.
