The Last of Us Part 2

Newly released The Last of Us Part 2 takes the combat from the first game and develops on the winning formula. So while you may have become a Jedi master of TLOU 1’s combat, Ellie’s new package of stealth options and seamless dodge during one-on-one fights mean there are lots to learn in this sequel. We’ve gathered a list of our most useful combat-related tips to help you take on the infected in The Last of Us Part 2 for both beginners and for the advanced gamers.

Beginner Combat Tips

  • Stealth killing enemies from behind is always the safe bet but if the enemy is close enough, you can seldom come at them from the side or even right on, as long as you’re in cover and close enough to immediately close the gap before they see you.

  • Crouching when firing will increase your accuracy by a bit, but going full prone will improve it even further!

  • Use bottles and bricks more often. There are loads lying around and you can only carry one at a time anyway. Throw them at your foe for a temporary stun, or use them to attract the infected in some spots, and attack them with a bomb or a molotov cocktail.

  • When stealthily eliminating human NPCs, make sure to leave the room before their friends show up. They’ll alarm the others and blow your cover. To help circumvent this, don’t stealth kill someone while they’re in the midst of talking. And when first grabbing someone, use the little time you have` to drop them back cover or into some grass.

  • When killing infected, make sure they’re really dead. At times, their limbless bodies will move toward you and bite at your ankles.

  • Oftentimes, you’ll find yourself traveling with a friend at your side. So don’t be scared to let them do some of the messy work. If you’re taken off guard and need to put a small distance between you and your opponent, your partner will seldom go in for a stealthy kill, or even shoot the foe down while they’re focusing on you. Your allies will also call out nearby opponents so move slowly to give yourself time to take their advice into account.

  • Lying under a car isn’t always works — enemies will search everywhere for you.

  • There are a lot of collectibles to be found on the map, but be extra sure to look out for the gun holsters to make weapon swapping more effective than ever.

  • Running away is ok — combat zones are big enough that Ellie can run away from a battle, allowing you to take your breath, and oftentimes re-enable your hidden status. Note that even if you’re covering, your enemies will be on high alert if they know you’re around here somewhere. This improves their response time.

  • If there are many factions in an area, you can let them take one other one out, either naturally, or by, say, leading a few clickers over to WLF members. It’s an active, ammo-saving move.

  • Consider how enemies interact with each other – the screams of a Stalker will make Clickers to run your way. And once a human enemy finds you they’ll call out your place to others.
  • Be careful when crafting! Just like in the original game, Part 2 doesn’t stop time while in your crafting menu, so make sure you’re in a secure spot before making yourself a health pack. Luckily you can make even when lying in the grass or under a vehicle. And of course, you can still move when using a health kit.

Advanced Comtat Tips

  • Try new strategies. Using a molotov cocktail can kill one enemy and can welcome clickers to the flames, ending their life. Setting up Trap Mines at points and then luring enemies will make fast work of anyone that gets there.

  • Stalkers growing in the walls are wearing jeans. You’ll get to the area where there will be infected walls with Stalkers lodged into them. If you see them wearing jeans, that’s how you know they’re just waiting to jump at you. Shoot them in the head before they get the chance.
  • The pipe bomb will bounce. When you’ll get access to a pipe bomb. While you can use it as a fast throwable you can also intentionally throw it a bit in front of you, letting it bounce near your target.
  • If you use pistol silencers, keep your silencer count. it can be found underneath the gun’s icon, separate from the ammo, it tells you how many silenced shots you have left in the gun so keep the count. You wouldn’t want to be seen and get noticed because of an accidental loud shot.

  • When you’re shot and knocked down, you can shoot from that prone location don’t try to get up.

  • When fighting human foes you usually have many of objects to hide behind and nearby buildings with many floors. If you keep dying, try approaching the area from a new angle or direction completely.
